Environmental Committee Updates
Vegetable Gardens As of last Friday all vegetable beds have been planted including the old vegetable bed in the arboretum. There are 15 teachers with 17 classes participating in the program. The plantings are exciting for the children because growth is seen in 3 days. We are helping them maintain the gardens.
Arboretum Ms. Sheperd’s class participated in planting bog plants in one of our arboretum beds that holds water. One of the plants was a pitcher plant that captures and digest insects for nutrition. It was a success and now they come help me in the arboretum.
Ms. Frederick, in structured learning, has a couple of students who love gardening, so as an incentive they get to garden with me in their own beds on Mondays, if they have earned enough points.
A scout trying to earn hours for Eagle Scouts has offered to make a platform for the arboretum storage shed. They will pay for the platform materials and they will put the shed we purchase from Lowe's together for us.
The arboretum is collecting bagged pine needles/straw for mulch to cover all the beds in the arboretum to help smother out persistent weeds. Collection is on Monday mornings at drop off time near the arboretum gate.
School Building Environment The fountain near the front entrance to the school has not been functioning for years. Tom Civitello cleaned the fountain and has been working on getting it fixed. We are hoping to get a new pump to get it working again.
Claudet cleaned the benches in the front yard of the building. Victor removed dead bushes and trees from that area.
